High cheekbones, full cheeks, smooth and rounded facial contours, a tapered chin, and a well-defined jawline are the hallmarks of an attractive woman’s face by today’s Western standards. Desired by many, this is often referred to as the “triangle of beauty” — wide in the upper regions of the face (forehead and eyes) and narrower down the chin. However, aging reverses this triangle of beauty as the skin succumbs to gravity and loses hydration, facial fat, and firmness. As a result, narrowing down of the upper cheek and temple areas, sagging of the middle cheeks, and the appearance of jowls can occur which in turn leads to a less attractive, heavier jawline. Massive weight loss and prolonged periods illness can also result in the same set of undesirable changes.
Also known as injectable volumizers, dermal fillers are mainly used to revitalize the face by restoring volume. Sagging and volume-deficient areas are filled and “lifted” to create smoother, younger facial contours.* VOLUMA is a new addition to the Juvéderm® family of volume-boosting hyaluronic acid (HA)fillers. It has been recently available in Canada while most clinics in the UK and Europe have been using it for a while with positive results. The FDA has not approved it for use in the United States yet, approval is expected anytime soon.
The makers of VOLUMA developed this filler to specifically improve overall facial contours by restoring facial volume, particularly in the temples, cheekbones, cheeks, and chin areas.* This filler also works best for individuals who want to smooth out facial lines and wrinkles.* In contrast to other hyaluronic acid fillers, VOLUMA is thicker and a more viscous gel. These characteristics give it numerous advantages than other fillers, both in the application process and the final outcomes. It is easier to apply and inject because of its lighter molecular weight. In addition, results are quite long-lasting, giving patients a natural, smooth, and youthful look up to 12 months.* Studies have revealed that VOLUMA tends to have fewer side effects than other hyaluronic acid fillers that are currently in the market today. Researchers studying VOLUMA’s effectiveness also noticed that there is no migration of the filler from the intended injection sites. This is greatly beneficial for both the injector and the patient. The injector can plan for specific doses and placement while the patient enjoys long-lasting effects because of slower dispersion and reabsorption.
To specifically assess and measure the aesthetic effects of VOLUMA treatments, researchers at the Department of Dermatology, Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany set out to study using two internationally recognized standards. First, the Ascher Scale which measures and evaluates volume loss. Second, the GAIS (Global Aesthetic Improvement Score) which specifically measures improvement in appearance and volume. The results of the study revealed that VOLUMA garnered high levels of satisfaction from both patients and physicians. Almost all of the study’s participants expressed that they are more likely to return for repeat injections and recommend VOLUMA to a friend. It is also worth noting that the study also showed VOLUMA to last longer than most volumizing hyaluronic acid fillers, with one treatment alone lasting from 6 to 18 months.*
As a naturally occurring substance in the body, hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers promote tissue hydration which in turn helps cells hold water and retain volume. When HA fillers are injected under the skin using thinner needless, the HA gel acts like an inflated cushion and plumps up volume-deficient areas. Its water-retaining properties help give the injection site a smoother, youthful look.*
