Skin Complexion and Surface Irregularities

There are three fundamental changes that happen to our skin that make us look older. These are the formation of lines and wrinkles, sagging of skin and poor tone or texture. Under the “tone and texture” category we have broken capillaries, pigmentation, blotchiness, rough skin and various types of scarring. Although most of these skin conditions are considered benign, many people find them rather unsightly. Fortunately, many non-surgical treatments are available at our disposal to correct many of these concerns.

Depending on the nature of the skin tone and texture issues we’re dealing with, a different course of action may be recommended by Dr. Mosser and his team. Sometimes a combination of two or more synergistic procedures may be necessary to deliver the wow factor. Azala Medical Aesthetics is fully committed to using only the safest and most effective treatments possible. Below is a summary of services that we offer to improve all your skin tone and texture issues and help you regain a more youthful and healthy complexion. Halo Fractional Laser

The Halo laser by Sciton® is an excellent option for patients who have skin aging in combination with tone, texture or scarring. Halo is a real game changer when it comes to fractional skin resurfacing because it can achieve in 1-2 sessions the same level of dermal correction as 5-6 sessions with more dated laser technology such as Fraxel, Clear & Brilliant, Ultra Pulse Encore or Cool Laser. These older generation devices are designed for multiple visits to the physician’s office to achieve a satisfactory result. Down time with the Halo is also much shorter and recovery is more comfortable than with a fully ablative laser like the CO2, which strips off the entirety of the skin’s surface.

Halo is capable of addressing multiple skin aging and texture concerns because it’s the first and only hybrid fractional laser that delivers both ablative and non-ablative wavelengths simultaneously. The non-ablative wavelengths target the deeper layers of skin to address sun damage, wrinkles, various scars, pigment issues and texture irregularities. The second superficial ablative wavelength helps to remove vaporized tissue from the skin’s surface to accelerate healing. Halo also features one-of-a-kind ‘band-aids’ that are formed during treatment to help to protect the skin and promote a quicker recovery.

BroadBand Light (BBL)

Patients looking to improve a number of pigment-related lesions with as little down time as possible may be interested in BroadBand Light (BBL) by Sciton. It’s the most advanced and up-to-date version of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) sometimes referred to as Photofacial, a technology that has been on the market since 1996. With the introduction of the BBL, IPL treatments were elevated to a new level of efficacy and customization.

BBL emits a high intensity broad spectrum visible light that targets both brown pigment (melanin) and red pigment (hemoglobin). These pigmented areas absorb the broad spectrum light and sustain thermal injury that is later repaired by the body, resulting in a more even-toned complexion. BBL has proven to be the gold standard for treating both red and brown pigment simultaneously for most skin types with fewer sessions. The range of treatment the BBL offers is far superior to single wavelength technologies such as Pulsed Dye Laser (Vbeam)and Nd:YAG which are limited to targeting either red pigment or brown, but not both at the same time.

PRP Microneedling

Patients who are interested in texture refinement and scar reduction may want to consider the MicroPen® microneedling procedure by Eclipse. The Eclipse MicroPen® and Bellus SkinPenare automated devices that glide continuously across the skin’s surface deploying 12 tiny needles, creating microscopic holes in the epidermis. These micro-injuries stimulate wound healing and new collagen production which ultimately improves the skin’s texture, scarring, enlarged pores and overall appearance. Combined with PRP (platelet rich plasma), microneedling can become even more effective at addressing texture issues related to skin aging.

There’s a wave of new treatments being offered that combine microneedling with radio frequency (RF) energy such as the Infini, Fractora and Profound RF. These devices are designed to deliver RF into the dermis for tissue coagulation and collagen formation. The problem with RF microneedling devices is that they’re extremely painful. At minimum, they require a topical anesthetic but in most cases a nerve block is necessary to make patients comfortable.

The MicroPen® and SkinPen offer a much more comfortable patient experience with equally effective results when it comes to improving texture and minimizing scars. Furthermore, downtime with the MicroPen® is very minimal. It’s typical to experience a mild ‘sun-burn’ feel to the skin which usually clears up in about 24 hours and patients can return to work the next day.

Vi Peel

Chemical peels still have a solid place in dermatology even though a number of other options are available. One reason for their continued popularity over the years is their efficacy and safety record. The Vi Peel is a good example of a highly effective skin treatment that contains a special combination of trichloroacetic acid and Retin-A. These are designed to improve tone, texture and clarity while fading pigmentation, softening fine lines and reducing pore size. The Vi Peel is also recommended to treat acne and acne scars. Precision Plus is a new addition to the Vi Peel line featuring Hydroquinone and Kojic acid, two powerful ingredients that specifically target more severe cases of hyperpigmentation and melasma.

The Vi Peel contains phenol which acts as an anesthetic and antiseptic at the same time, helping all the other ingredients penetrate more efficiently while dulling pain and discomfort. Furthermore, chemical peels are very suitable for darker complexions because the pigment is not being targeted like it is with some laser or IPL devices. Overall, a chemical peel is a good option to consider either on its own or in conjunction with another treatment.
