In the lineup of vascular disorders, varicose veins are the most conspicuous and difficult to cover up. Varicose veins, and their milder version spider veins, result from excess pressure being exerted on the legs and feet causing blood to pool in certain areas. As the veins become dilated, they start to look gnarled and bumpy, causing bluish protrusions that can be embarrassing for sufferers. For the most part, however, varicose veins are a harmless cosmetic issue although they can lead to pain and discomfort requiring treatment.
Possible solutions for these types of vascular disorders include surgery, injections, laser ablation and radiofrequency. A very common varicose vein treatment is sclerotherapy, the practice of injecting a liquid solution (that may contain lidocaine for pain relief) directly into the vein. Once injected, the solution causes an irritation and subsequent collapse of the damaged vessels which eventually get reabsorbed into the tissues and fade after a few weeks to a month.
Sclerotherapy may be very effective for treating larger spider veins on the face and body but it’s a very drastic measure considering a gentler technology such as the BroadBand Light is available. Side-effects from sclerotherapy include bruising, skin sores, raised red areas which can take months to fully resolve. Although rare, more serious complications are possible such as inflammation, air bubbles or having an allergic reaction to the liquid solution.
BroadBand Light (BBL™) manufactured by Sciton® is a sophisticated and advanced Intense Pulsed Light technology that’s very effective for spider vein removal. Its broad spectrum of light is absorbed by red pigment (hemoglobin), coagulating blood vessels and thereby reducing redness. Another advantage of BBL™ is that it treats brown pigment (melanin) and improves skin texture and various types of scarring for more even skin tone and smoother complexion.
BBL™ offers another skin enhancing feature, a treatment called Forever Young™. An exciting new study published by Stanford University has concluded that regular BBL™ treatments (2-3 per year) can reverse the gene expression of aging skin cells, essentially returning them to a more youthful state. It’s a long-term strategy that can be used to keep the complexion clear from vascular lesions while delaying the visible signs of aging and improving overall skin health. Dr. Mosser and his team have been using their BBL™ device successfully for many years to treat pigment and skin aging concerns with minimal downtime and discomfort.
