Aging gracefully doesn’t have to mean looking older before your time or succumbing to the inevitable effects of gravity. Smooth, supple skin is not exclusive to the younger generations anymore. Women and men over forty have discovered many rejuvenating skin treatments at their disposal. The Profound facial treatment created by Syneron Candela is one such device being used for non-surgical skin-tightening.
Profound is in some ways similar to other microneedling procedures. Very fine needles puncture the skin to deliver a controlled injury and stimulate wound healing and the production of new collagen. Profound incorporates radio frequency (RF) energy which triggers the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.
Prior to treatment, topical numbing and possibly nerve block injections are administered to ensure patient comfort as RF delivery can be painful. Immediately after the procedure the face will be red, and hot and is possible to see tiny bumps from the needle punctures. Downtime is approximately one week. Since the procedure is only performed on the mid and lower face the skin-tightening results are limited to the jawline and neck area. Caution must be taken in treating patients with a darker skin types or those prone to keloids.
Aside from the pain and discomfort, there is a wide variation of opinions in the clinical world regarding results from RF devices . Dr. Mosser and his trusted clinicians have first-hand experience with many RF modalities, but unfortunately they have the opinion of being underwhelmed by the results. The manufacturer does not consider Profound RF to be analagous to other RF treatments, but at this time Azala Medical Aesthetic does not offer any RF treatments.
Patients who would like to experience the multitude of microneedling benefits may want to consider the gentler SkinPen® procedure by Bellus Medical. With deeper penetration than competitor Eclipse MicroPen®, SkinPen works much better to break down scar tissue. Therefore, it’s much more effective at treating scars (acne, surgical and traumatic) on the face and body, improving fine lines, texture issues and enlarged pores with minimal downtime and discomfort.
The SkinPen® is a microneedling device that glides across the skin’s surface, deploying 12 tiny needles into the epidermis. The needles create microscopic injuries that stimulate wound healing and new collagen production. Several weeks later the skin takes on a more plump, healthy and smooth appearance. The SkinPen® is safe for all skin types and can be customized using the pen’s various features and enhanced with the addition of medical skincare products. When combined with PRP (platelet rich plasma), microneedling can become even more effective for addressing skin aging concerns, particularly fine lines and wrinkles.
If skin laxity and sagging are a concern, patients have the option of being treated with NovaThreads. NovaThreads is a non-surgical facelift technique using surgical sutures to elevate and tighten the mid and lower face, as well as the neck. Here at Azala we believe that by combining multiple modalities such as suture threads, microneedling and Halo fractional laser we can address patients’ skin laxity issues with much better predictability and satisfactory results.
