What Is an Oxygen Facial?

When it comes to skin health oxygen is considered a good thing. The benefits of oxygen range from improving circulation, skin texture and hydration to killing bacteria and reducing rosacea. One way to introduce oxygen directly into the skin is with an oxygen facial treatment. Under the “oxygen facial” umbrella there are several different methods of delivering the oxygen molecules where needed.

The original oxygen facial used a medical grade hyperbaric oxygen machine to ‘spray’ the skin with a stream of O2 gas, while also delivering a cocktail of nutrients. The skin would first have to be thoroughly exfoliated to allow the oxygen to penetrate. Next, we saw the introduction of oxygen-infused skincare that claimed to raise oxygen levels in the skin chemically, through the interaction of certain ingredients. The most recent incarnation is the OxyGeneo™ microdermabrasion facial. Similar to the original oxygen facial treatment it combines exfoliation with deep infusion of oxygen. The only difference is the device and products produce CO2 bubbles which burst on the skin’s surface, sending oxygen-rich blood to the area.

Drawbacks and Limitations

It’s highly unlikely that oxygen delivered through the skin’s surface would be able to penetrate to the dermis, the layer where healing and regeneration occur. As a hydrating facial, any plumping or moisture effect generated through oxygen infusion or by the application of products only works on the surface and is therefore, temporary.

Dr. Mosser and his experienced staff are committed to offering patients highly effective and long-lasting solutions to their skin concerns. To improve hydration, fullness and to relax dynamic lines the clinic offers consistently reliable options such as Botox or Dysport, dermal fillers and Microneedling with PRP. For more advanced skin aging, Sciton’s powerful Halo fractional laser and BroadBand BBL Intense Pulsed Light devices can help to correct pigment and texture issues, fine lines and wrinkles, acne, acne scars, sun damage and vascular disorders such as rosacea and broken capillaries.

Additionally, patients looking for alternatives to light-based treatments may be interested in the Vi Peel chemical peel to address aging skin and texture irregularities. A recent introduction of the Precision Plus line combines TCA and Retin-A with Hydroquinone and Kojic acid, a synergistic blend that’s designed for deep exfoliation with the added benefit of treating various types of pigment-related concerns such as age spots and melasma.

Once the skin’s texture and smoothness has been restored with Vi Peel, laser or BroadBand BBL then a good home care regimen can go a long way to maintaining the professional results achieved at the clinic.
To ensure good skin health over the long-term the staff at Azala recommends investing in a high quality medical-grade kit that includes a cleanser, toner, antioxidant (vitamin C serum) as well as retinoid product from reputable brands such SkinCeuticals, Neocutis and Obagi.
