Liposuction

Are you pleased with the overall proportion and shape of your body?  Even the healthiest and most physically fit individuals can suffer from disproportionate body contours as a result of excess fat tissues.  This could potentially make others see you differently than you want them to perceive you as well as how you see yourself.  These disproportionate body contours can occur anywhere, whether in your face or body. One option for combating these difficult to target areas is liposuction.

In most cases, excess fat can be due to genetics and not because of poor eating habits or lack of regular exercise.  For this reason, there are individuals who find themselves with unattractive body contours despite being able to tone up the other parts of the body with strict adherence to diet and exercise.  Liposuction has proven to truly work in getting rid of double chins, sagging upper arms, enlarged breasts for both men and women, and excess abdominal fat.

Yet, it is worth noting that liposuction is not the treatment of choice for obesity nor it’s a quick fix for poor eating habits and lack of exercise.  In addition, this treatment cannot help improve the appearance of cellulite.

Basics of Liposuction

The process of liposuction generally involves fat removal through a powerful suction apparatus.  After creating tiny incisions in the skin of the area that needs reshaping, surgeons will insert a narrow tube in these incisions to safely suction and remove fat.  Once the unwanted fat is removed, the skin in the treated area will shrink into its new shape.*

It is important to note that just like how a sweater loses some of its shape over time, the same goes for skin which loses some of its elasticity.  For this reason, negligible skin irregularities may be noticeable following the procedure.  Advancements in surgical techniques such as ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) and tumescent anesthesia has significantly improved this time-tested body contouring treatment.*

Who Are the Best Candidates for Liposuction?

The best candidates for this fat reducing treatment are individuals who are within 20 pounds of their ideal body weight and have been struggling with extra fat deposits despite a balanced diet and regular exercise. Any part of the body that has problems with excess pockets of fat and disproportion will greatly benefit from this surgery.  Age doesn’t directly influence candidacy  and can be performed on both young and old patients — from as young as 16 to as old as 80.  Currently, liposuction is the most popular treatment to remove stubborn and unwanted fat in the our San Francisco, Union Square office. *
