Juvederm® hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers first received FDA-approval in 2006. They quickly gained popularity in aesthetic medicine because HA is highly compatible with the human body and adverse reactions are extremely rare. Furthermore, HA dermal fillers have the advantage of being fully reversible with the enzyme hyaluronidase if necessary. This is extremely useful in the unlikely event that the filler is injected into a blood vessel or if the patient needs to have it dissolved. The two original Juvederm® products that launched from the start are Juvederm® Ultra™ and Juvederm® Ultra Plus™. They are indicated for deeper injection and correcting areas of volume loss, filling in wrinkles, and lifting sagging skin. Both Juvederm® Ultra™ and Juvederm® Ultra Plus™ can last 4-6 months in most areas of the face and up to a year in the tear troughs (under the eyes). Juvederm® recently introduced its new Vycross® line of cross-linked products (Juvederm® Voluma, Juvederm® Vollure and Juvederm® Volbella) that last up to 12-24 months. Juvederm® Ultra™ and Juvederm® Ultra Plus™ have been used safely and reliably for over a decade. The main difference between them is their molecule size and viscosity. Ultra is slightly thinner so it’s excellent for areas such as tear troughs, vertical lip lines (also called smokers’ lines) and very subtle lip enhancement. With its larger molecule and superior hydrating capabilities, Juvederm Ultra Plus™ is best suited for replenishing lost volume in the mid face and plumping the skin around the nasolabial folds, cheeks and for lip injections. In very special cases Ultra Plus may be appropriate under the eyes. Juvederm® products are generally not recommended for use as cheek filler in cases of facial wasting or advanced volume loss. Furthermore, Juvederm® is not recommended for smoothing very fine lines because injecting too close to the surface can result in the Tyndall effect (a bluish tinge to the skin).
Dr. Mosser and his team have extensive training and experience in using Juvederm® Ultra™ and Juvederm® Ultra Plus™. For maximum patient comfort a topical numbing cream will be applied to the area prior to treatment. Juvederm® Ultra™ and Juvederm® Ultra Plus™ contain lidocaine mixed in with the hyaluronic acid to further minimize pain. As with any HA fillers results are instant and patients will see fuller lips, less wrinkling and smoother skin around the nose and mouth. Some degree of swelling, bruising and soreness at the injection site are normal, especially after getting lip injections. Therefore, it’s best to plan your treatment 2-3 weeks in advance of special occasions or meetings. Most swelling and tenderness usually subsides within 48 hours; however, the filler can take up to 2 weeks to settle in and look its best. The cost of Juvederm® varies based on your location, the amount and type of filler needed to achieve the desired results. A thorough assessment will determine which filler is right for you. We encourage you to schedule a consultation to determine if you’re a good candidate for Juvederm®, to discuss your personalized cost of treatment, financing options and any special offers.
