Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), also called Photofacial (sometimes spelled Fotofacial), is a modality that surfaced in the mid 1990’s as a treatment for vascular irregularities. Over time IPL’s rage of treatments and wavelengths expanded to include skin aging and sun damage in order to give skin a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Specifically, IPL reduces redness, broken capillaries, brown spots, fine lines and enlarged pores. It’s considered both non-ablative and non-invasive, which means it doesn’t break the skin as can occur with some laser treatments.
To clarify, Intense Pulsed Light is not laser but rather a high intensity broad spectrum visible light that’s emitted in wavelengths ranging between 500 and 1200 nm. As the light energy enters the skin it becomes converted to heat and is absorbed by the target. Sometimes the target is brown pigment (melanin) and sometimes it’s the red (hemoglobin) pigment. The pigmented areas injured by the laser are repaired by the body creating new tissues and skin cells. After a series of 3-5 treatments the complexion starts to look smoother, more radiant and youthful thanks to the production of new collagen and elastin that occurs during the healing process.
IPL treatments are generally regarded as safe and effective with few side-effects. Having less intensity than laser or BBL, multiple sessions spaced 3-4 weeks apart are needed for satisfactory results when treating pigment, broken capillaries and sun damage. Furthermore, this type of procedure may not be suitable for all skin types, especially not for those with darker complexions as pigmentation problems may occur or get worse.
Intense Pulsed Light technology has evolved considerably since the 1990’s. Sciton’s Broad Band Light (BBL™) is the most advanced and powerful device currently on the market and the industry standard when it comes to quality and efficacy. What sets BBL apart from other IPL brands is the accuracy and precision of its treatment parameters. This allows physicians to target specific conditions and customize treatments according to each patient’s unique skin requirements.
A ten-year Stanford University study concluded that ongoing BBL treatments can reverse DNA damage at the cellular level by “changing the expression of genes associated with longevity and aging.” This means that skin cells that were subjected to regular BBL energy behaved and looked much younger than skin cells that were left untreated. Based on these breakthrough findings Sciton developed an anti-aging program called Forever Young as a long-term solution to slow down skin aging.
Forever Young consists of continuing with regular BBL treatments after the initial series of corrective procedures are completed. All that’s required is one 30-minute BBL session 2-3 times per year. It’s a simple yet powerful preventative maintenance regimen to keep the skin free from vascular and pigmentation lesions, stimulate collagen production and extend overall skin longevity.
