What Is the Blue Peel?

Face peels have been around for decades as a way to eliminate imperfections and reveal a brighter and healthier complexion. Over time peels have evolved in strength, sophistication and function, from the mild glycolic acid to the deeper-penetrating trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Each type of chemical peel has its unique place in skincare and choosing the right one depends on each patient’s individual concerns and skin improvement needs. The Obagi TCA Blue Peel® is one option that’s being used to treat aging, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars.

The Obagi Blue Peel® is an in-office, medium-depth TCA facial chemical peel performed by specially trained clinicians. Obagi Blue is not the strongest TCA peel available. In fact it’s specifically designed for slow penetration and gradual results to eliminate the downtime associated with other peels. Although it’s milder, it’s still a traditional chemical peel so some redness and swelling within the first 12 hours and peeling skin 3-4 days later is expected.

Drawbacks and Limitations

When it comes to resurfacing capabilities, Obagi Blue Peel® would be considered in the weaker category. Other TCA products such as the Vi Peel yield much better results without patients having to necessarily endure that much more downtime. Given a choice, it makes more sense for patients to undergo a more powerful peel such as the Vi Peel Precision Series to achieve their goals with fewer sessions and potentially lower cost.

Vi Peel and BroadBand Light BBL™ Treatments Yield Better Results Than Obagi Blue Peel

Dr. Mosser and his trusted clinicians feel that the best facial chemical peel with long-lasting results can be achieved with a series of 2-3 Vi Peels that use a combination of Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and Retin-A to address a multitude of skin concerns. These two powerful ingredients eradicate acne-causing bacteria deep in the pores so they’re very useful for treating mild acne and also acne scarring and texture issues. The Precision Plus formula includes Hydroquinone and Kojic acid for dealing with more serious cases of hyperpigmentation and discoloration.

If evening out skin tone is the primary reason for wanting a chemical peel then patients may want to consider a series of BroadBand Light BBL™ treatments by Sciton. BBL™ is an advanced version of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) that emits light at multiple wavelengths that’s absorbed by brown and red pigment under the surface of the skin. Therefore BBL™ can be a better option for addressing concerns such as hyperpigmentation, acne scars tone and texture with less discomfort or downtime than a TCA peel.

Once patients have achieved their desired level of skin-smoothing and pigment reduction with either the Vi Peel treatment or BBL™ sessions then a good home care regimen can further enhance their professional results. Azala Medical Aesthetic offers only the highest quality staples such as cleansers and toners as well as powerful anti-aging products such as antioxidants, vitamin C serums and retinoids from reputable brands like Obagi, SkinCeuticals and Neocutis.
